In order to provide holistic care to premature newborns as well as critically ill infants requiring intensive care, Artemis Curepipe Hospital has established its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Operational since November 2023, the unit boasts a highly qualified medical and paramedical team led by Dr. Radhika Jagatsingh, a pioneer in neonatal resuscitation in Mauritius. Located on the second floor adjacent to the maternity ward, neonatology, and the nursery, it can accommodate up to 4 babies.
With this unit, the medical facility, part of the Falcon Healthcare group, is able to offer continuous and multidisciplinary care to pregnant women and their babies from the announcement of pregnancy to childbirth. Critically ill newborns are promptly attended to, which is a significant advantage.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit works closely with the maternity ward, especially in cases of high-risk pregnancies that often involve potential complications for the infant. The team at Artemis Curepipe Hospital’s NICU, comprising physicians, nurses, and specialized caregivers, is ready to intervene at any time, day or night. “Beyond providing medical care to infants, the caregiving team plays an essential role with families. Indeed, our professionals have been trained to support and guide parents during their children’s hospitalization. We remain available to them at all times to address their questions and concerns, aware that this is a difficult time for them.
“By providing specialized care to critically ill newborns, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit enhances our ability to address several healthcare challenges. This underscores our commitment to offer comprehensive, quality, and affordable healthcare services to the community. The opening of this state-of-the-art unit is a significant step in implementing our strategy, which aims to position Artemis Curepipe as a center of excellence by demonstrating our commitment to providing holistic care to patients from the early days of their lives,” explains Dr. Ashish Sharma, Group Chief of Strategy and Development.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has been designed to provide a calm and comforting environment for newborns by limiting noise and brightness. The staff also continues to support the family after their child has left the NICU, providing guidance so they can ensure their child’s well-being once they return home. The experience and expertise of the professionals are invaluable and position Artemis Curepipe Hospital as a leading institution in neonatal medicine in Mauritius.
